Discussion:
kde-3.5.8 for rhel coming to kde-redhat/testing real soon.

I haven't forgotten, just been busy. Now that fedora8 is out the door,
I've returned to work earnestly on building kde-3.5.8 for rhel4 and yes,
rhel5 too. :)

rhel/centos users, keep an eye on kde-redhat/testing repos. I'll need
feedback more than ever, since I don't use rhel/centos much myself
anymore (on my desktops anyway).

x86_64, yes. If you want multilib, you'll have to roll-your-own by also
enabling the i386 repo.

OK. Thanks.

Hi Rex,

first of all, thanks a lot for not leaving rhel behind. You are doing
a very important job!

rhel/centos users, keep an eye on kde-redhat/testing repos. I'll need
feedback more than ever, since I don't use rhel/centos much myself
anymore (on my desktops anyway).
two questions:

1) Do the rhel packages now depend on some external repo?

2) Are the packages in the testing repos already complete? I hope I
didn't hit an incomplete mirror.

I've tried an update to the testing packages today on rhel5 i386 and
rhel4 x86-64 and the result was:

rhel5:

Error: Missing Dependency: libIlmImf.so.4 is needed by package kdelibs
Error: Missing Dependency: libHalf.so.4 is needed by package kdelibs
Error: Missing Dependency: libIlmImf.so.4 is needed by package kdebase
Error: Missing Dependency: libxmms.so.1 is needed by package kdeutils
Error: Missing Dependency: libslp.so.1 is needed by package kdenetwork
Error: Missing Dependency: qca-tls is needed by package kdenetwork
Error: Missing Dependency: kde-settings >= 3.5 is needed by package kdelibs
Error: Missing Dependency: libmeanwhile.so.1 is needed by package kdenetwork
Error: Missing Dependency: libakode.so.2 is needed by package kdemultimedia
Error: Missing Dependency: libaudio.so.2 is needed by package arts
Error: Missing Dependency: jasper is needed by package kdenetwork
Error: Missing Dependency: pinentry-gui is needed by package kdepim
Error: Missing Dependency: libgnokii.so.3 is needed by package kdepim
Error: Missing Dependency: kde-settings-kdm is needed by package kdebase
Error: Missing Dependency: kde-settings is needed by package kdebase
Error: Missing Dependency: spambayes is needed by package kdepim
Error: Missing Dependency: kde-filesystem is needed by package kdelibs
Error: Missing Dependency: libxine.so.1 is needed by package kdemultimedia
Error: Missing Dependency: libjasper.so.1 is needed by package kdelibs
Error: Missing Dependency: libakode.so.2 is needed by package
kdemultimedia-extras

I'm concerned about the spambayes dependency of kdepim. While kdepim
can integrate spamassassin, bogofilter, and spambayes there were no
dependencies on these packages in the past.

rhel4:

-> Running transaction check
--> Processing Dependency: libkfaximage.so()(64bit) for package: kdegraphics
--> Finished Dependency Resolution
Error: Missing Dependency: libkfaximage.so()(64bit) is needed by
package kdegraphics

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Andreas

Not everything is there, yet. But, what *is* there is mostly usable,
except for rhel5 (as you discovered).

Wierd. ?? Maybe try:
rpm -e kdegraphics
yum update
yum install kdegraphics
?
May be tickling a bug in yum here.

No dice unfortunately (I ran into the same problem for i386).
Kdegraphics-extra appears to contain libkfaximage.so and has not been
generated yet ?

Hope this helps,

Ah, kdegraphics-3.5.8 doesn't build yet (still tracking down the
problems), poppler-qt-devel isn't available for rhel5 (yet).

Now I'm configured and not sure why kdegraphics is complaining here, our
rhel5 repos contain no kdegraphics pkgs. ??

So, poll: how many rhel users want/need kdegraphics-extras which
contains only:

I do not particularly care about kdegraphics-extras. Only kpovmodeller would
be of any interest to me. Of course I do need kdegraphics, since I use e.g.
kpdf every day.

at least on my rhel4 system kdegraphics-extras (version see below)
contains kuickshow while kfax is included in kdegraphics. If there is
a canonical replacement for kuickshow or if the packaging will change,
I don't think I will need -extras.

rpm -q kdegraphics kdegraphics-extras

fyi, in the latest (kde-3.5.8) packaging, kuickshow is in the main
kdegraphics pkg.

That was a remnant of fc6's kdegraphics, where
imlib/kdegraphics-extras(and kuickshow) had to be in Extras, not Core.

1) Do the rhel packages now depend on some external repo?
Yes, kde-redhat rhel packages have depended on epel now for a long time,
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL
could you please include that piece of info on kde-redhat.sf.net?

Including the epel repo for rhel5 the number of missing dependency
errors goes down quite a lot:

Error: Missing Dependency: libxmms.so.1 is needed by package kdeutils
Error: Missing Dependency: qca-tls is needed by package kdenetwork
Error: Missing Dependency: kde-settings >= 3.5 is needed by package kdelibs
Error: Missing Dependency: libmeanwhile.so.1 is needed by package kdenetwork

I'm concerned about the spambayes dependency of kdepim. While
kdepim can integrate spamassassin, bogofilter, and spambayes there
were no dependencies on these packages in the past.
Yes, these are new. Maybe I should mark these deps as fedora-only?
Since kdepim runs perfectly fine w/o a spam filter (AFAIK no compile
time intervention necessary), I'd say that the kdepim package should
not depend on the spam filter packages. In addition, if such a
dependency is introduced/kept why only for spambayes and not for all
the supported spam filters? Just my 2c

OK, all these should be taken-care-of now (kdenetwork is still
rebuilding so to drop dep on qca-tls).

I cheated and copied gnokii from rpmforge.

Warning kde-settings is still horribly bad and NEEDSWORK(*), since I:
1. copied it blindly from fc6
2. copied in xorg-x11-xdm from fc6 to satisfy deps.

(*) Suggestions, patches welcome.

Hi Rex,

on RHEL5

yum --enablerepo epel --enablerepo kde --enablerepo kde-all
--enablerepo kde-testing* update

now ends with

Error: Missing Dependency: libxmms.so.1 is needed by package kdeutils
Error: Missing Dependency: libmeanwhile.so.1 is needed by package kdenetwork

On RHEL4 the meanwhile package is hosted by the kde repo. Looks like
xmms is no longer in RHEL5?!

It works for me with the following repos enabled:

- CentOS: base, updates, addons, extras
- Epel: epel
- Kde-redhat: stable, all, testing, testing-all
- RPMforge: rpmforge

You are missing RPMforge-Repo:
# rpm -qf /usr/lib/libxmms.so.1
xmms-1.2.10-14.el5.rf

- CentOS: base, updates, addons, extras
- Epel: epel
- Kde-redhat: stable, all, testing, testing-all
- RPMforge: rpmforge
# rpm -qf /usr/lib/libxmms.so.1
xmms-1.2.10-14.el5.rf
Rex "fixed" it by borrowing the rpm from rpmforge.

I have a general comment. Since RHEL and its clones are often used in
larger installations it is not a good choice to add too many
repositories. For our desktop cluster we mirror the repos on local
servers, because available repo mirrors might be unhappy if 100
machines from the same subnet hit them each night at almost the same
time which would also be a waste of WAN bandwidth.

We want to keep the number of repos that we need to mirror to a
minimum. I'm not going to spend time and add another big repo mirror
job to our system just for two packages, so I highly appreciate Rex
efforts to keep the minimal set of extra packages in the epel repo.

Cheers,

Andreas

p.s. Rex, if you ever make usage statistics keep in mind that the
large installs tend to keep their local mirrors :-)

Here we go again. This is the kind of thing that I've been talking about for
the past year. Its the kind of thing yum and smart are very bad at an apt-get
excells at.

With an effective prioritization system in place it is possible to add as many
repos as you want and maintain your sanity by knowing what package comes from
where and enforcing the policy.

This is the main reason I shy away from repos that don't support apt-get
natively. I use them, but the packages are so unique that I don't run into
conflicting epochs for installations.

Who defines too many? 3, 2, 42?

Take a look at yum-priorities and yum-protectbase. RPMforge has here
priority=60 and protect=0, CentOS-Base has priority=1 and protect=1.
Only rpms that are not available in higher repositories are taken from
a reporitory with a lower number. So you will get a running system
with all packages you needed.

regards
Olaf

Hi Rex,
on RHEL5
yum --enablerepo epel --enablerepo kde --enablerepo kde-all
--enablerepo kde-testing* update
now ends with
Error: Missing Dependency: libxmms.so.1 is needed by package kdeutils
Error: Missing Dependency: libmeanwhile.so.1 is needed by package kdenetwork
Ugh, ok, I'll see about either getting these into EPEL or just copy pkgs
from rpmforge into kde-redhat to satisfy these deps.

Copied rpmforge's xmms, meanwhile pkgs into kde-redhat/testing for now.
Long term: get these into EPEL as well.
