Discussion:
Report on the upgrade from 4.0.5 to 4.0.82

I've just upgraded from 4.0.5 to 4.0.82 and have to say it's MUCH better
now :) Several of the bugs that were driving me mad have gone. Of
course, many are still there and some new ones are present too, but KDE
have improved a lot.
Some of the bugs on the new version:
. After upgrading, all of my configured kmail accounts disappeared (in
and out accounts)
. The Navigator toolbar of Kontact is empty (the navigator_actionlist is
empty)
. The configured dictionaries for my kmail identities where changed from
english-United States to english-Australia (!?)
. All my configured shortcuts were lost after the upgrade (global and
application specific)
. It's not possible to move plasmoids over the plasma panel anymore
. When the plasma panel is placed vertically, it does not remember its
size and position when I logout. It doesn't even remember the plasmoids
that were added to it while it was vertical. Everytime I logon, its back
horizontally at the botton of the screen.
. This one is really driving me mad: kwrite, kate and, of course, the
edit window of kmail, don't move the cursor up and down when the
corresponding arrows are pressed (!?). However, the left and right
arrows work ok. The up and down arrows of the numeric keypad, when
numlock is off, work too.
. The icons in notification area are placed very oddly when the panel is
in vertical position. Also, the icons are messed up (even those of KDE
applications - see attached image)
. When a CD/DVD or a removable storage device is plugged, the new
removable media window is opened. However, if the "open in a new window"
action is chosen, an error is shown ("it was not possible to list the
URL system://media/sdxx"). Obviously, the folder in which the device was
mounted was not named after its device name.
. KMix window always starts opened after logon
. If the slideshow screensaver is selected and one specific transition
effect is used by it when it runs, kwin goes to 95%-98% of CPU and
freezes. It's necessary to restart X (CTRL+ALT+BS) to use the GUI again.
The problematic transition effect is the one in which dots of the new
image are drawn over the old one until the new image is complete.
. The configuration option "Enable taskbar notification", in System
Configuration -> Desktop -> Launch Notification, can not be disabled
(after closing the system configuration tool, it's reenabled by itself)

And others I can't remember now. I've filed bugs for some of these and
added info for bugs that were already opened, but I still have to file
bugs for several others.

Out of curiosity, there's a folder named "virtual-drives" that insists
in reappearing in my home dir. What is it for?

Indeed, it is nice to have the Show Desktop back and the new KRunner is great
:-) Now trying to get the hang of Folder View.

I will comment on some of what you have found, with my update 4.0.80 >
4.0.82
Post by Marcelo Magno T. Sales
. The configured dictionaries for my kmail identities where changed from
english-United States to english-Australia (!?)
Yes I saw this as well, just had to reset it in the Kmail Config to UK-English
Post by Marcelo Magno T. Sales
. It's not possible to move plasmoids over the plasma panel anymore
I think this was a patch by one of the KDE Sig people to allow moving of items
in the Panel ? appoligies if I am wrong. I miss this feature.
Post by Marcelo Magno T. Sales
. This one is really driving me mad: kwrite, kate and, of course, the

I just tested this with Kmail and Kwrite and all works as it should here,
Post by Marcelo Magno T. Sales
. KMix window always starts opened after logon
Yes confirmed here, Bug #163770
Post by Marcelo Magno T. Sales
. The configuration option "Enable taskbar notification", in System
Configuration -> Desktop -> Launch Notification, can not be disabled
(after closing the system configuration tool, it's reenabled by itself)
Yes confirmed again, have not found the bug # on this one yet,
Post by Marcelo Magno T. Sales
Out of curiosity, there's a folder named "virtual-drives" that insists
in reappearing in my home dir. What is it for?
I don't see this on this machine.

Other small problems seen here that other users maybe seeing:

Missing thumbnails in taskbar # 162943

No multiple rows in the taskbar #163935

I had a problem turning off the Tool tips as on occasion my machine would lock
for a while (4.0.5) now I can't turn them on, maybe related to this #155432

All in all I think these latest release are excellent!

Cheers,

Colin

. The configured dictionaries for my kmail identities where changed
from english-United States to english-Australia (!?)
Yes I saw this as well, just had to reset it in the Kmail Config to UK-English
I saw later that even my identities which were configured to use the pt-
BR dictionary were also changed to en-Australia (!). All of them had
this dictionary configured after the upgrade.

It seems this one is a bit more complicated. It does not happen always,
but it happens often. After a few logins/logouts, the arrows work and
stay this way until I logout. There was one time when the arrow keys
were working, but then the "e" key would work only if pressed together
with meta (!). A real mess. I will have to study this a little more
before a file a bug.
Also, the khotkeys daemon is not working here (System configuration ->
Advanced -> Services manager), so my shortcuts don't work. I thought I
had lost them after upgrade, but they are there. They just don't work
because khotkeys is not running. Is it running at your machine?

Another thing that troubles me a little is that sometimes the tips shown
when you hover the mouse over a widget do not disappear when the mouse
goes away. Worst, they stay on top of other windows, sometimes on all
desktops. Does this happen to anyone else?

Thanks,

Marcelo

I'll keep trying to reproduce this but so far all seems fine on this box, it
is going to be one of the hard ones to track down I guess.

I have not seen this problem since 3.5.x, sorry this reply does not help you
much. I guess someone may ask what video drivers etc, I use NVidia hardware
and Livna's rpms and have just started to play with the Desktop Effects and
all is working well.

I have just found KGet still does not work, I thought it was fixed in trunk so
I'll check kde.bugs and the kget mail lists. Does this work for anyone else?

Also some missing Icons in Konq's search engine bar (google for example)

Cheers

I was editing an email in Kmail once (have not tried again) and found that I
was unable to move the cursor. I tried the arrows and clicking with the mouse,
but there was no way to get a cursor into the text to edit the mail, so I was
forced to send as it was (fortunately only a missing period at the end of one
line).

Alos, the number lock never comes on when starting kde. I have it set both in
the bios and in kde to come on at boot, but it doesn't in kde.

I have multimedia keys on my keyboard that I have mapped with xmodmap and
setkeys and made a script to run at login in Autostart. xev reports that all
is working and shows me the correct xkeysyn or whatever it is called, but when
I create hotkeys? in the system settings, I am unable to even type these
characters. The input window for the key remains empty and there is no way for
me to enter the desired key.

when you hover the mouse over a widget do not disappear when the mouse

Yes, a couple of times, pieces of the tool tip widget remains on the screen,
both on the 'desktop' or wallpaper, or on the window of an application. To get
rid of them, you have to hover the mouse over another icon and generate a new
tool tip. Curiously, I have tool tips disabled in the window frame, but they
show up anyway.

If konqueror is programmed to start an instance in memory for faster loading,
then upon boot, it doesn't just load in the background, but actually opens a
window.

The slideshow screensaver has been a problem for many years and has still not
been fixed correctly. The culprit is always the transition with the dots in
which a new image appears through pixels of the old one until the transition
is effected. I wish they would just trash this transition, as all of the others
work perfectly. As I said, this has been a recurring problem since kde3 early
and I have mentioned it a number of times on fedora forum or the fedora
mailing list.

. KMix window always starts opened after logon
Yes confirmed here, Bug #163770
Turns out this one's easy, kmix now starts automatically and changed launch options (?). quick-n-dirty fix is remove kmix references from:
/usr/share/kde-settings/kde-profile/default/share/config/ksmserverrc
or maybe even remove that file altogether.

I think this was a patch by one of the KDE Sig people to allow moving of items

We snarfed that patch from OpenSUSE. Made me nervous because it never
went upsstream. Guess what? It never did, and the patch doesn't apply
against 4.1.

Good news is that we've got at least one of our kde-sig'ers to commit to
work on this (with upstream plasma devs) properly this time, and if all
goes well, will land in time for 4.1

Other bugs I forgot to mention:

- In Dolphin, it is often impossible to click on the + and have the directory
tree open up in the folders panel.

- Also, the blank lines in the kmail editing disappear when the html mail is
translated into plain text, so that this email will look like a whole bunch of
run-together lines, instead of 3 separate paragraphs, like I wrote it.

The plus is to just select the folder AFIAK, example click on the plus and
move your mouse away the folder stays selected..
As a test I just turned on Dolphins tooltips and mouse over the plus it says
"select item" :)

You can enable tree view in >
Prefs > View Modes > Details, and in the main window use the Details view,
default is Off.

How odd, its the opposite here :-) CTRL - Click works, Shift - Click does not.
I wonder if this could be related some settings in the Region/keyboard layouts
etc, I would bet mine is set different to yours... just a thought.

Colin, I think he was talking about the directory tree in the folder
panel (the one on the left). This option is effective on the details
panel (the one on the right). Weird, I can't find any configuration that
activates the plus sign you mention on the detail view. In Configuration

selection toggle" that may be related to the behavior you describe, but
it seems to do nothing here.

Odd, indeed. CTRL-click works here only in the icons view mode, but not
in details. However, Shift-click works in both modes.
I selected the ABNT2 (pt-BR) keyboard during F9 installation, but I have
keyboard layouts disabled in KDE's System configuration utility.

Naw, I'll wait. Glad to hear that someone's on it. I like to use it as a
talking book feature using project gutenberg texts.

As for festival, in kde3 and fedora 7, it used to be possible to use the
mbrola voices to get festival to read in german and french. In fedora 8/9,
mbrola no longer works as a helper application for festival. I recently read
on a gentoo list, I think, that festival has to be compiled with an mbrola flag
enabled. Is it possible that fedora's festival is no longer compiled with the
mbrola flag set to on? It would sure be nice for that to work again, as the
mbrola voices are of higher quality, IMHO, and to get it to read in german and
french as well as english would be a lot better.

In 4.0.83, I think the problem with opening folders by clicking on the + in
the folder panel is resolved (I haven't noticed it for a while).

As for shift-clicking, it works. I figured out ctrl-clicking: in the past, I
always clicked on the text and this does not work in kde4. If you click on the
icon, however, it changes into a + or a -. This takes a moment to figure out,
but I view it as an improvement! If you click on the icon, you can alternately
select/deselect a file; if you click on the text, the file will be opened, as
determined by the file associations. I think this is very nicely done. In
former times, it sometimes occurred that a file would be displayed when one was
merely trying to select it. This solution, by distinguishing between clicking
on the icon versus clicking on the text, solves the problem.

I think I'm missing something, but here Dolphin does not show this +/-
sign when I click the icon (in detailed view). I found no way here to
select multiple alternated files in detailed view (in icon view, CTRL-
clicking works like expected). In Configuration -> Configure Dolphin ->
View modes -> General there's an option "Show selection toggle" that may
be related to the behavior you describe, but it seems to do nothing
here.

The + and - is only visible in Icon and Columns view Marcelo, it only becomes
visible if you mouse over the top left of a Folder Icon, then you can click on
the + and the folder becomes selected or as kwhiskerz wrote click on the text
below the Icon then the folder opens.

Cheers,

click on the text below the Icon then the folder opens.
I am wrong sorry.. its been a long day :-(

The + and - is also visible in Detailed View when you mouse over the Folder
Icon whether you have the Expandable Folders option set or not.

Jos Poorvliet wrote about Dolphin on Planet KDE (and made a you tube video)
showing some of the features in Dolphin for 4.1 which helped me :)

Cheers
