Discussion:
menu problems again

I have CrossOver Linux installed. A recent KDE update, I guess,
has borked my menus. Most of the Crossover Program items
disappeared, including Word, Powerpoint, Excel, and so forth,
some Office utilities remained - sometimes, in the past, menu
items that disappeared were moved to other locations, or wound
up in Lost and Found, but not this time, though it did generate
several copies of my "Windows Programs" folder in other places
such as the System folder. Even stranger, when I try to re-enter
them manually, none of my applications will run, but generate an
error msg "IOPL not found" or something like that. I've googled
that one, but it's not yielded much. But, here's what's even
stranger - if I open a terminal and run my Windows programs from
the command line, they open just fine, using the exact same
command I'm entering in the KDE menu editor!

I don't know if there's anything there that rings a bell, but,
I'm just reporting it to see if anyone has an idea.

Last time (if I recall correctly), CrossOver was to blame. I wouldn't
be surprised if that is (still) the case.

Are you saying 'last time' in reference to me? That wouldn't be the case
because I only recently installed it. I had a menu problem many months back
which entailed the kbuildsycoca command...

If memory serves, a similar menu problem wrt CrossOver was reported here
in the not too distant past, and the root cause was a malformed xml/menu
file from CrossOver.

OK - I missed that. It didn't turn to be too big a deal in the end...

Strangely enough, I just received a Word doc in an email and opened it up with
MSWord and it was a total mess. Closed it and re-opened with OOo and it came
up exactly like it was supposed to - it was just a text message I'd sent to
someone that they'd brought into Word and used bolding to highlight some
responses to questions --

Had to manually re-enter the menu items - not so bad. The problem with the
commands was solved by simply entering the executable name in the command
field, instead of the whole path with quotes around it to deal with the
spaces - it didn't like the latter - apparently, my Windows programs
executables' path have been placed in my Linux user path environment by
Crossover. Not technically a solution, since I have no idea why the stuff was
deleted by the KDE update...

I have not used Crossover in a long time but back in the days, there was a
command that could be used to regenarate the menus. Maybe it still exists?

I found the command, it's a button in the configuration window. I
ran it but it didn't seem to do anything.
