KDE 4.0.x performance

I hate to even mention this because it is very esoteric, but has anyone
noticed the KDE 4.0.x seems sluggish? The rendering of the menu and app
startup seem slow when compared to GNOME. At first I was thinking nvidia
drivers might be the culprit as I was using the "nv" driver, however, using
the latest beta nvidia driver doen't change anything (I am not using
effects). I realize that the nvidia driver is still under development.

Also noticed this. In part I think this is due to the excessive
logging all KDE4 apps do, which can be seen when they are started in a
konsole, or in ~/.xsession-errors (which can become very large).

Using kdebugdialog, and unchecking everything there speeds up KDE a
bit. Nevertheless some things are still slow, e.g. rendering of
toolbar widgets in the 'old' applications like kontact.
