Discussion:
Possible issues with KDM

Hi guys,

somebody in the german fedora forum pointed to an issue with kdm. If the
users starts "systemsettings"->advanced-> login manager, the modul is
launched, but complaints about not beeing able to create two path:
/usr/share/apps/kdm/themes
/usr/share/apps/kdm/faces
The reason for this is that the folder /usr/share/apps/kdm/ does not exist.

I set up an VM with an fresh fedora installation (+update & kde-testing,
changed /etc/sysconfig/desktop to KDE) and was able to confirm this
problem. It might be that either a wrong path is used in the kdm
configuration module or the rpm should create both folders. Currently an
user needs to create them on their own. However the path
/usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/ and /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/faces does
exist, so I guess it is properly the first one. The problem might effect
current kde-testing and updates-testing packages. Can anyone confirm this?

I also noticed an second issue with kdm. If the user launchs the same
configuration module and is closing the windows, the dialog "run as
root" is shown again asking for a password. Pressing on "cancel" does
not seems to have an effect, because the same dialog is shown over and
over again. I just tried to confirm this on current trunk, however I was
not able to login as system manager. Could it be that the dialog is
patch from fedora? If yes, somebody should try, if he is able to
reproduce this also.

That's it. Thanks for your work, everything else seems to running quite
fine. :)

Best regards,
Florian

Right, the correct folder in kde4 is /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm , it was
looking in the wrong place.

This should be fixed in kdelibs-4.0.99-3 and newer.

I'm still seeing this here Rex,

Unable to create folder /usr/share/apps/kdm/themes
Unable to create folder /usr/share/apps/kdm/faces
So Themes cannot be installed still as per bug #456004

rpm -qa|grep kdelibs
kdelibs-devel-4.1.0-2.fc9.i386
kdelibs-4.1.0-2.fc9.i386
kdelibs3-devel-3.5.9-16.fc9.i386
kdelibs-common-4.1.0-2.fc9.i386
kdelibs3-3.5.9-16.fc9.i386

Cheers

In VM I am running KDE 4.1.00 with installed kdelibs-4.1.0-2.fc9.i386
and I am still able to reproduce it.

The other issue will be reported to bugzilla, i'll post the # later.

Best regards,
Florian

Yes, we patched in a crude "administrator mode" not present in upstream
kde4.

bugzilla.redhat.com please.

For everybody, who wants to follow this issue:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=457479

I was not able to reproduce the situation to get stuck in a loop,
however it might be fixed with the issue itself.

Best Regards,
Florian
