Discussion:
KDE4: workspace background and widgets. What is the long term plan?

Hello, kde-redhat

Is there a more active KDE user list where I should ask questions instead?

I re-installed KDE4 from the unstable tree and am trying harder to
learn how to use it, before uninstalling it again.

I'm frustrated about basic things in the workspace background. On the
kde website, there are links pointing to documentation and manuals,
but the links point to empty documents. So it is a bit frustrating.

If you know the plans for the desktop, can you please share your information?

1. I want widgets (plasmoids?) only on one workspace. It appears
impossible now, but in the future will it be possible? In
WindowMaker, there was an option "omnipresent miniwindows" that
controlled whether things appeared only on one workspace or on all of
them. I want that in KDE4. If I could do that, then I could have the
3D world running on one workspace, a photo album on another.

2. Can we configure the configure left-click on the root window menu?
I have scripts in my ~/bin that I run regularly, they have names like
MLT1 ET1 and so forth. I can't see a way to put those on a left click
menu as I did in kde 3, and I also can't see a way to get them into
"favorites" under the blue K.

3. Will the kdesktop ability to set images or slideshows on different
workspaces return?

In one of the KDE press releases about KDE4, I see mention of the
desire to use common programs from freedesktop.org to handle generic
things, and the kdesktop may have been removed for that reason. Is
that so?

4. If answer to number 3 is positive, can somebody tell me how to
update scripts that use dcop to change backgrounds? Instead of this:

dcop kdesktop KBackgroundIface setWallpaper 8 mypic.jpg 4

what do I need?

In particular, the "kde" and/or "kde-linux" lists may be what you're after.

That said, irc (on freenode), #kde #kde-devel channels often give even
faster dialog and feedback.
