X failing to start

Hello Folks,

This is off topic, I know, but I am hoping some kind soul might have an
answer for my X problem.

After a normal shutdown yesterday, today I now find X will not start
using init 5. I have checked the xorg.conf file and can see nothing
untoward. Changing inittab file to init 3 and then using the command
startx it takes quite a while for x to start.

Along with this problem came cups and sendmail services taking forever
to start during the boot process.

Has anyone any idea what may have happened?

Not the foggiest, but I do know that for fedora 9, you are no longer supposed
to use an xorg.conf. It autoconfigures itself. I removed mine on both desk- and
flaptop computers and all is well (yes, the synaptics daemon wants that shm
line, but it works anyway). Other than that, I find this is one hassle out of
my computer life.

OK. Thanks. The real problem is gdm not starting I've discovered. Should
be reasonably easy to sort out now.

Graeme.
