I guess you know that it seems kde4 release will be without kmail. Sad. For
me, this makes it a non-starter.

Subject: Request to exclude KMail from the KDE 4.0 release

Hi,

OK, here is my offical request to keep KMail out of the KDE 4.0 release. There
are too many things badly broken (see list below), and there is only me and
some occasional contributers working on KMail for trunk.
I definitly don't have the time to fix these problems myself, even though we
have another month until KDE 4.0 is released.

I stronly oppose releasing KMail in the current state, because of the grave
problems (like mail loss) it has. It would ruin its reputation and the users
would be rightfully angry and disappointed.

So please, exclude KMail from the release.

I completely agree with you. But if you think that this is a real
problem, then take a look at http://www.bramschoenmakers.nl/node/299.

OK - I read that. But, what does not including KMail in KDE4 have to do
with cleaning out all the existing bugs in KDE3? Are you saying that the
whole project is so full of bugs that parts of it must be shed to
preserve the whole? Or something like that?

Nothing, forget my post, upgrade always to the bleeding edge and leave
bugs behind. By the way, the flash-plugin bug will closed too, great.

Now I know why most of distributions use gnome as their default
desktop. In my opinion long time support will be getting more
important, but maybe I am wrong.

My favorit list of nice kde bugs:
- kdm - xdmcp, funny that I am using gnomes gdm to login to kde
- konqueror - nsplugins, javascript, flash-plugins, unusable with
t-home.de (where is the login for user and password?), ebay.de
(Aktion, script), buecher.de (epiphany is 30 times faster)
- kopete crash on logout
- put your icons under your home and export home by nfs - you will get
the slowest menu ever seen on any desktop

greetings
Olaf

Wow, dissing a whole new platform/desktop on the basis of a single
application? *boggle*.

Rest assured, kmail isn't simply going away (in fedora), F-9 will
include kdepim(3), just like F-8. A kde4 desktop can (still) run kde(3)
or even gnome applications just fine, thank you. :)

Dissing a whole new platform/desktop was not my intent. I'm just
concerned about the future of KMail, and trying to get info. Sorry if
anything I said came across that way. KMail happens to be my preferred
client. I'm typing this on a brand new Windows Vista laptop using
Thunderbird. There's some things I miss greatly, though I've been able
to do most. The ability to highlight just a portion of a long message
and hit the reply button for instance, and up pops the composition
window with just the highlighted text - TBird doesn't do this, for example.

I'm not intending to 'dis' anything. I just can't live without kmail.

Excellent!
Alarm bells were ringing when I saw comment "kde 4.0 is a non-starter",
that's all.

And to be clear and re-iterate: Using a kde-4.0 desktop != no kmail. :)

Oh? The discussion I saw on kdepim led me to believe that there was no way to
use kmail with kde4.0. What solution do you have in mind?

Solution: Keeping the existing kdepim(3) and kmail.
