I just installed KDE4 on F8. When I start some apps (vlc, mplayer,
rhythmbox) GNOME appears to take over the desktop and I have to kill X to
get back to normal. Has anyone else noticed this behavior?

No.

Define exactly what you mean by "GNOME appears to take over the desktop"?

probably I should say "attempts to take over". Everything except for the
app goes blank. Then after several seconds I see part of my GNOME wallpaper
(which is different from the KDE wallpaper). The KDE taskbar etc are
completely gone.
