Discussion:
kontact seems broken after update to 3.5.6

Just upgraded a fairly fresh install of BLAG 60000 (FC6 derivative) to the
KDE-redhat 3.5.6 - I've done this without issue on another box. Kontact was
working perfectly before the upgrade. Now, it opens to a big blue "Welcome"
screen, but none of the modules are present. There's a "Skip this
introduction" link, but clicking on it does nothing. Both Main and Navigator
toolbars are enabled but not visible. KMail is still functional if I open it
in stand-alone mode. I've been poking at this for about an hour, and can't
seem to find a solution. Does any one have any suggestions?

More on this: I removed kdebase as suggested by some googling, which removed a
bunch of dependent packages, and reinstalled. I'm still getting the same
blue "Welcome" page when I open kontact, and no modules available; if I go
into configure from the help menu, it says "the specified library kontact
could not be found - the diagnostics is "Library files for "kcm_kontact.la"
not found in paths" - clicking on any of the separate modules in the tree
results in similar messages for each

Rex, any suggestions? - this is not a mission critical install, I can nuke
anything and retry because there's no data to speak of, to lose, but, I'm not
sure what to try next

Rex: This is the answer to your query re: above - sorry for breaking the
thread, but I'm doing this from the broken machine and I don't have your
response to reply to from here

OK, there's your problem. You're mixing-n-matching kde-redhat and
fedora packages. kde-redhat's latest is kdelibs-3.5.6-4

Our kdelibs (among others) is patched to not require .la files for
runtime use. Afaik, fedora's packages haven't been patched likewise.

OK - I see why that's happenned, but will have to figure out why.
It sees your package, but didn't use it because of a dependency
problem which requires libjasper.so.1

Fixed now, but I'm not sure of the why - I had to find a newer version of
Jasper, ver 1.9, which my package managers weren't pulling, even though I
found it on the redhat site. Even stranger, downloading the file and
attempting to install it produced software verification errors from various
sites. Finally, I found one that worked though I had to let it through
unsigned, even though I have the Redhat gpg keys installed. Anyhow, once I
got that installed, KDElibs went right on, and that cured my problem.
