Discussion:
bad Kmail filter behavior

I noticed this in the past few days, but they've been hectic and I couldn't
remember what brought on the behavior. If I try to apply a new filter to my
incoming mail to sort mail into a folder, I can enter the information into
the relevant fields but as soon as I click "Apply", the information
disappears. Is anyone else seeing this?

I does not help but...
I Just tested this here and it works fine here on F8, I just created a test
filter to your email all info was saved and the filter worked no problem.

KMail 1.9.6 (enterprise 0.20071123.740460) Fedora 8

I'm on Bugzilla as your message came in. There's probably no point to filing a
bug since everything is frozen for the new upcoming release -

Here's some refinement of the problem. It's not the creation of a filter
that's a problem - I just created a new filter which works. It's when I try
to add a match-field-row to an existing filter that the above behavior
occurs.

I've often wondered why there was a restriction of 8 matches per filter. I
have some filters that are
named 'Advertising', 'Advertising2', 'Advertising3' etc....... It would be a
nightmare to have to create a separate filter for every match, though...

Hmm, a good question maybe for the kde-pim list or enter a "wish" @ kde-bugs

Here's some refinement of the problem. It's not the creation
of a filter that's a problem - I just created a new filter
which works. It's when I try to add a match-field-row to an
existing filter that the above behavior occurs.
Here's a bit more refinement: I'm on my machine at the office. If
I open an existing filter by selecting "Settings/Configure
filters...", a window opens showing all my filters. On the left
is a list of "Available filters" - I can highlight one and its
rules appear under "Filter criteria" on the right side of the
window. Five lines down from "Filter criteria" is a "More"
button and clicking on that adds a criteria row, up to a maximum
of eight rows. (In order for any criteria to be considered, you
have select the appropriate "Match" button under Filter
criteria - you can choose to match all the criteria, or any.)

On my home machine, if I add a criteria row and select "Apply" at
the bottom right of the window, the data I just filled in just
disappears - if I simply close the window without applying, the
same thing happens, and a subsquent re-open shows my new
criteria row was not preserved/saved.

I just tried the same thing on my machine at the office. In this
case, there was no problem - so, whatever is happenning is
unique to the one machine. Both machines are F8 with all the
latest patches and updates from Fedora and KDE-Redhat

And finally, the above scenario has been replicated on my office machine after
updating to the latest kdepim:
kdepim-3.5.8-10.svn20071129.ent.fc8
kdepim-libs-3.5.8-10.svn20071129.ent.fc8
Colin Thomson has confirmed this behavior on his machine, and has stopped the
behavior by regressing to the previous version of kdepim -
kdepim-3.5.8-4.svn20071013.ent.fc8

Rex: I know this isn't high priority in KDE land for the moment because of the
upcoming version release; given what's already been said about existing bugs
being wiped clean, does it make sense to file a bug report? These filtering
capabilities in Kmail are a huge time-saver for me and I just want to do
whatever I can to see this problem fixed, without being a thorn in anyone's
side.

Yes, please do report it.

In the meantime, I'll whip up a kdepim-3.5.8-12 for kde-redhat/testing
for you to try out.

OK, sorry about taking so long but I've just become a step-dad and there's a
lot of new things clamoring for my attention... I just updated to the above
kdepim and I continue to get the same results.

I assume this is not a Fedora-packaging-of-KDE problem and the bug should
filed at KDE's bugzilla page, am I getting that right, Rex? If so, it may
take me some time to get done for the above stated reason, but I'll do it.

Thanks, guys. He's an 11 year old by my wife's previous marriage, just arrived
from Peru. He's here to stay this time, but, he's visited every year for the
last five. We get along well, but, now he's going to enter the school system
and go through the expected missing his father phases, and such. Life's good,
and I'm confident we'll work it through. It's a bit of a change to go through
as I'm about to turn 60 in less than two months.

Don't lose newly entered filter settings when clicking on ok or apply.

Rex: Is this something that could be incorporated into an upcoming package
for testing?
As I'm working my way into KDE4, I'm getting over some earlier negative
reactions. One thing that is specifically fixed is the broken "add criteria"
behavior in KMail.

On my KDE4 machine "About Kontact" from the KMail 'Help' menu shows "Version
1.2.4 (enterprise 0.20071204.744707)" This version is the one that works

On this machine "About Kontact" shows "Version 1.2.4 (enterprise
20071204.744693)" which is broken

Rex: I don't understand how this correlates to KDEPIM versions, but is there
any way of getting the later version of Kontact?

Yes, the fix is in (: , but we haven't decided yet whether it is worth
it to push a kdepim update just for this single fix.

(else, we'd be pushing updates weekly, which end-users tend to get fed
up with... "what? *another* 13MB update?").

by "the fix is in", it is in the kdepim packages built and in rawhide
and kde-redhat/unstable repo (which also includes some fixes to make it
install ok with kde4).

thanks, I'd just tried enabling kde-redhat unstable and seeing if there was a
kdepim update available before I posted that

maybe I just need to wait awhile for propagation --- or, do I have to install
the full KDE4 on this machine? this is my main 'production' machine, in the
sense that I use it for all my personal stuff, so I go a bit more
conservative on the updates - my laptop is more like a testbed -

for me, this is a huge hassle - I tend to add up to 5 or more criteria a week
to my filter stack, so, after 3 weeks or so of non-functionality, I'm piling
up a lot of stuff in my inbox that I have to move manually - that's not such
a big deal, but, it does force me to wade through all my spam more carefully,
to make sure that stuff I can't filter into a box before it gets to the spam
filtering doesn't get classified false positive - I know mine is not the only
consideration you have to take into account, but, I thought I'd let you know
one user's experiences from the trenches

Well...I spoke too soon - Kontact is closing suddenly, just vanishes, no
error, no warning - poof. It happens while reading messages. I've left the
office, but, before I left, it happened a number of times. It seemed to
happen when I had finished reading messages in one folder and the next
message was in a different folder, although, I can't be completely sure of
that. I was multi-tasking on a video editing project which was giving me a
strange problem while on deadline, so I couldn't give my full attention. I'll
have to resume the investigation on Monday when I'm back in office.

OK, back in office today. Was reading my mail for awhile, and
then realized that Kmail wasn't crashing like it was on Sat; the

sure of that. I was multi-tasking on a video editing project
which was giving me a strange problem while on deadline, so I
couldn't give my full attention. I'll have to resume the
investigation on Monday when I'm back in office.
OK, back in office today. Was reading my mail for awhile, and
then realized that Kmail wasn't crashing like it was on Sat; the
only thing different is that I was running some updates on Sat
After a few hours, the crashes returned. Not as frequently. When it happens,
it's sudden, no warning, no error message, it just closes. Upon re-opening
Kontact behaves normally. The pattern is completely random at this point, no
particular action appears to trigger it except that it only happens when I
click on my 'Go to next unread message' button; it doesn't have to be
traversing folders as previously reported, either - it was happening when
going from message to message in the same folder as well.

I realize I'm talking to myself, but, maybe someone will glean
something from all this: the sudden closing of Kontact behavior
is being triggered by specific messages. For instance, in the
Fedora-test-list right now, there's a thread
"is kernel-2.6.24-9.fc9 a little large?" - the second message in
that thread is a reply by Jesse Keating. Each time I get to that
message, Kontact reliably shuts down. I did a sort on Jesse's
messages and it turns out that any messages from him cause the
behavior. I took a look at his message in Thunderbird on a
differrent machine, and nothing jumps off the page about
it...just a simple text reply so far as I can tell.
