Hi Rex

Now that KDE4 has been officially released, I was wondering what the game plan
is?

official plan (for F9):
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/FeatureKDE4

kde-4.0 landed in rawhide today, and we issued kde-4.0 developer
platform updates-testing packages for F-7,8.

When/if we ever find some free time, we may consider building the full
desktop for F-8 (and maybe even F-7) too.

For the record: I've rebuilt the f9 rpms in mock for f8 yesterday. There were
some minor issues (one missing BR, two wrong listed %files). But over all it
didn't need any further work.

But that was just the rebuilt, I haven't installed and started it yet. :)

OK... So there won't be an official release until F9? Is that correct?

I miss kde-redhat. :(

I have been testing kde4 in rawhide and I can assure that there is some work
to be done. Mostly in kde 4 but also in the integration with fedora, and also
the mixed work of having some kde3 and kde4 bits presents (as there are
packages who have not yet been ported to kde4).

The time used to fix some of those issues as well as the integration with
fedora (and thus rhel/centos) is well spent.

What I remember from kde-redhat is a stable product (even most of the time
in the unstable branch). That as most of the time the wallmark of this
project. :-)

The work spent now in kde 4.0.0 will pay off in 4.0.x and specially in 4.x.y
(with x>1). So think of this as midterm instead of a short term strategy.

Believe that the work done is humongous so there is a reason for the delay.

Although no one asked me I should say that agree with kde for delivering
such a product earlier than what some meant by a stable a release. As it was
clear by the above and also agree with the focus on F9. The lessons learned
there will allow a better porting for older releases.

The last time we had such a change was between 2.x to 3.0 and even that is
not a good match due to the increased size and complexity of the project now.
So I think that a little patience for a unique moment is not too much to
ask. :-)

No... it isn't to much to ask. I'm very much looking forward to kde 4 and the
great work that you guys do.

Tell ya what, there's still a *lot* of rough-edges, but I'll commit to
putting some more time/and effort into a backported build when 4.0.1 hits.

If you have the time. I for one am really looking forward to seeing it.
